First Friday Fish Fry at Stella Nonna, Berkeley

This last Friday I got to experience the yumminess that is Milwaukee Style Fish Fry at Stella Nonna, located at 2315 Dwight Way in Berkeley (between Ellsworth and Dana).

We arrived a little late and unfortunately the fish was gone! BUT, we got to have the delectable shrimp fry as an alternative and our taste buds were not disappointed.

Stella Nonna is a commercial kitchen that opens up its doors to the public every first Friday. Casual, friendly atmosphere offers the opportunity to meet new people, sit or meander, and even (if you so choose) eat under a string of lights outside, complete with picnic table style dining.

$10/person includes:
Two pieces of beer battered fish, two potato pancakes, coleslaw and bread. The carrot cake is extra but the drinks are free!

I was walking up Dwight Ave near campus with some friends looking for a dinner spot on Telegraph. We came across the sign "Milwaukee Friday Night Fish Fry" and peeked down the parking lot driveway.  It was set up with tables and Christmas Lights, with a line of people heading into a small doorway.

We took a chance and tried it. The line moved quickly and we were presented with two huge, crisp pieces of delectable fish, coleslaw, bread, potato pancakes and a ramekin of applesauce. Absolutely delicious. My friend from Chicago vouched for the authenticity of the ingredients, although the the bread wasn't white bread, but some kind of Italian. All the better.

The server/cashier asked us what kind of "Milwaukee beverage" we wanted as it was included in the $10 price. We obviously looked confused, so she said we could have a classic "PBR" (learned later that meant Pabst Blue Ribbon beer) or a Brandy Old Fashioned.  We chose the latter and although it came out of a pre-mixed pitcher, it was one of the best cocktails I have had in recent memory.

We split a carrot cake (an extra $3) and it too was fantastic. It had a sour cream tasting frosting.

The coolest part is the whole thing seemed fairly underground. No formality of a restaurant, just the chance to have delicious food and eat under the stars.

I guess we discovered a little bit of the Midwest right in Berkeley that night. We are already planning a return visit!
